Discover Cards Move to Capital One on July 27: What Changes and What to Do Before the Switch

Discover it accounts start moving to Capital One’s app on July 27, 2026. Rewards and the $0 fee carry over, but three redemption options are ending.

If you carry a Discover it card, mark July 27, 2026 on your calendar. That is the day your account starts moving to Capital One’s website and app, and while your card keeps its name, your rewards, and its $0 annual fee, a few redemption options are going away for good. Here is exactly what changes, what stays, and the three things worth doing before the switch.

What is happening on July 27

Capital One completed its acquisition of Discover in 2025, and the account migration is now reaching cardholders. Starting July 27, 2026, Discover it accounts begin transitioning to Capital One’s platform in waves that continue into early 2027. Once your account moves, you will manage it through the Capital One app and website. Discover.com and the Discover app will no longer show your account.

Your physical card does not change. Discover it branding stays on the card, primary cardholders keep their existing card numbers, and your rewards balance carries over in full. Authorized users are the exception: they will be issued new card numbers as part of the move.

What you gain

The migration is not all downside. Capital One is layering several of its platform perks onto Discover accounts:

  • Capital One Offers. The shopping portal that gives cash back at hundreds of online retailers becomes available on Discover accounts after the move.
  • New 5% travel categories. Hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, and activities booked through Capital One Travel earn 5% back, as do tickets purchased through Capital One Entertainment. This is genuinely new earning territory for a card whose bonus categories have always been quarterly and rotating.
  • Statement credit redemptions. You can apply cash back as a statement credit toward your balance, and Discover it Miles cardholders gain the option to redeem miles for gift cards.
  • Gift card discounts continue. The 5% to 20% bonus value on gift card redemptions survives the transition.

What you lose

Three redemption features are being discontinued, and this is where the “what to do before July 27” list comes from:

  • Minimum payment redemptions. You will no longer be able to put rewards toward your minimum payment. If you use this as a budgeting backstop, that option ends with the migration.
  • Pay with Rewards via Apple Pay. Redeeming cash back at checkout through Apple Pay is going away.
  • Small gift card redemptions. Gift cards get a new $25 minimum. Discover previously let you redeem at lower amounts.

One more quirk: automatic statement credit redemptions do not carry over automatically. If you have autoredemption set up today, plan to re-enroll on the Capital One side after your account moves.

What stays the same

The core of the card is untouched. Rates below are as listed in our card database, verified 2026-03-22:

Feature After July 27
5% rotating quarterly categories Continues, still capped at $1,500 in purchases per quarter, activation still required
Cashback Match (first year doubled) Continues for new cardholders
Annual fee Still $0
Base earning rate Still 1% on non-category purchases
Referral program Continues, $100 per referral with a $500 annual cap
Card number (primary holder) Unchanged
Card number (authorized users) New numbers issued

Capital One has confirmed these details in its official Discover transition FAQ, which is worth a skim if your situation is unusual.

What to do before July 27

Three concrete moves, in priority order:

  1. Spend down rewards the way you prefer while the old options exist. If you like Pay with Rewards through Apple Pay, or you redeem gift cards in small amounts, do it before your account migrates. Neither option survives the move.
  2. Update autopay and subscriptions tied to authorized user cards. Authorized users get new card numbers, so any recurring charge running on an authorized user’s card will need the new number once it arrives. Primary cardholders can skip this step.
  3. Download your statements. Access to Discover.com ends once your account moves. Grabbing a year or two of PDFs takes five minutes now and saves a support call later if you ever need them for taxes or a dispute.

Nothing here requires canceling or replacing the card. The Discover it Cash Back remains one of the strongest no-fee rotating-category cards, and the quarterly 5% calendar continues under Capital One. If anything, pairing it with a flat-rate travel card gets more interesting after the merger, since Capital One’s own Capital One Venture X now lives on the same app and portal where your Discover rewards will sit.

Where this leaves the Discover it in your wallet

The obvious comparison is the Chase Freedom Flex, the other big no-fee rotating-category card. Both earn 5% on activated quarterly categories up to $1,500 in purchases per quarter, and both sit at a $0 annual fee. The Freedom Flex adds permanent 3% on dining and drugstores, while the Discover it counters with Cashback Match, which doubles everything you earn in your first year. Rates for both are as verified in our database on 2026-03-22.

The merger tilts this comparison in an interesting way. Freedom Flex points get their outsized value when paired with a Sapphire card, because that unlocks transfers to Chase’s airline and hotel partners. Discover cash back has never had a premium pairing like that. After July 27, Discover rewards live on the same platform as Capital One’s miles ecosystem. Capital One has not said whether Discover cash back will ever combine with miles from cards like the Venture X, and we are not going to speculate, but the plumbing now exists in a way it never did before. If that door opens, the quarterly 5% earnings on your Discover it could start funneling into an airline and hotel transfer program with real outsized-redemption potential.

Who should not care about any of this: if you use your Discover it purely as a 5% quarterly card, redeem as statement credits, and have no authorized users, the migration will barely register. Activate your categories each quarter and carry on.

Bottom Line

The July 27 migration keeps everything that makes the Discover it worth carrying: the rotating 5% categories, Cashback Match, and the $0 annual fee. The losses are narrow but real, so redeem through Apple Pay or in small gift card amounts before your account moves, and watch the mail for new authorized user card numbers. After that, the change mostly amounts to logging into a different app.

FAQ

Q: Do I need to apply for a new card or take any action to keep my account?
A: No. The migration happens automatically. Your account, rewards balance, and card number (for primary holders) all carry over without any application or enrollment.

Q: Will my Discover card still say Discover after July 27?
A: Yes. The Discover it name and branding stay on the card. What changes is where you manage the account: the Capital One app and website instead of Discover’s.

Q: Do the 5% rotating categories change under Capital One?
A: The rotating category structure continues, including the $1,500 quarterly cap and the activation requirement. Capital One is adding new always-on 5% categories for travel booked through Capital One Travel on top of the quarterly rotation.

Q: What happens to my rewards balance during the move?
A: It transfers in full. Cash back and Discover it Miles balances carry over to the Capital One platform, and gift card redemption discounts continue after the move.

Q: When exactly will my account move?
A: The first accounts transition on July 27, 2026, and Capital One says the migration continues in waves into early 2027. You will be notified before your account moves, so watch for email from Capital One with your specific date.
