Update, April 24, 2026: The Barclays-to-Citi transition is now complete. All Barclays AAdvantage cardholders have received new Citi-issued cards. If you are looking for a full review of the card you now hold, see our Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select review.
Your Barclays AAdvantage card is moving to Citi on April 24, 2026. Here is what that means, which Citi card you will receive, and the things you need to do before then.
American Airlines has confirmed that all Barclays-issued AAdvantage credit cards will automatically migrate to Citi on April 24, 2026. No action is required to keep your account open, and there is no opt-out. But there are a few things you should do now to avoid a disruption to your autopay setup and online account access.
What is happening
Barclays has been issuing the AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard and the AAdvantage Aviator Silver World Elite Mastercard for American Airlines for years. On April 24, 2026, those cards will be reissued under Citi, which already manages several other AAdvantage co-branded cards.
This is the largest bank-to-bank co-branded card transfer in recent memory. All Barclays AAdvantage cardholders become Citi cardholders on that date. Your account history, credit limit, and existing AAdvantage miles will carry over. Because AAdvantage miles live inside the American Airlines loyalty program itself, and not inside your card issuer’s system, your miles balance is completely unaffected by this change.
Which Citi card will you receive
Citi is not creating new card products for this migration. Instead, each Barclays card maps to an existing Citi AAdvantage card:
| Your Barclays card | Converts to | Annual fee |
|---|---|---|
| Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard ($99 AF) | Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select | $99 (no change) |
| Aviator Silver World Elite Mastercard ($199 AF) | Citi AAdvantage Globe Mastercard | $350 standard; legacy $199 rate honored through February 28, 2027 |
If you currently hold the Aviator Silver, Citi has committed to honoring your existing $199 annual fee through at least February 28, 2027. Your first renewal on or after March 1, 2027 will be billed at the standard $350 Globe rate unless Citi extends the legacy pricing again. The Globe’s benefits at $350 include four Admirals Club one-time passes per year and an annual companion certificate after $30,000 in spending.
What stays the same
- Earn rates. Citi has committed to maintaining the same bonus category earn rates you currently have on your Barclays AAdvantage card. No devaluation at launch.
- Benefits. Your existing card benefits, including free checked bags, preferred boarding, and any annual companion certificate, will transfer as-is to the corresponding Citi card.
- AAdvantage miles. All miles earned on your Barclays card post to your AAdvantage account, not your card account. They are already yours and are not touched by this migration.
- Annual fee (Aviator Red holders). Your $99 annual fee stays the same. Aviator Red maps to the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select, which also carries a $99 annual fee.
- Annual fee (Aviator Silver holders). Your $199 annual fee is honored through February 28, 2027, even though the Globe’s standard rate is $350. Evaluate the card’s value at that renewal date.
Three things to do before April 24
The migration is automatic, but a few practical steps will prevent headaches on and after the transition date.
1. Cancel or update your Barclays autopay
If you have autopay set up through Barclays, that enrollment will not transfer to Citi. Your bank account details stay with Barclays, and Citi has no access to them. Log in to your Barclays account before April 24 and either cancel the autopay or note the bank account you used, so you can re-enroll quickly on the Citi side. Missing a payment deadline during the handoff period can trigger late fees and interest charges, so this is the most important step.
2. Expect a no-login window from April 24 to 26
Between April 24 and April 26, both Barclays and Citi online portals will be temporarily unavailable for migrated accounts while the systems sync. Your physical card will still work for in-person and online purchases during this window. You will not be able to log in to view your balance or make a manual payment online until Citi’s portal is live on April 27. If your statement is due between April 24 and 26, make your payment through Barclays before April 24 to avoid any gap.
3. Update every subscription and recurring charge
Citi is issuing new card numbers for all converted accounts. This is not a small subset of accounts where cards need physical replacement: new card numbers are part of the migration itself. That means every subscription, streaming service, and recurring charge you have on file will need to be updated with your new Citi card number once you receive it in the mail. Check for a new card in your mailbox in the days following April 24. Common places to update: Netflix, Spotify, Amazon, gym memberships, insurance autopay, and any tolling or transit accounts. A missed update does not immediately cancel your subscription, but the charge will decline when it next attempts to bill the old number.
4. Set up your Citi online account starting April 27
Citi’s online portal will be ready for migrated accounts starting April 27, 2026. Head to citi.com on or after that date and enroll your account. If you already have a Citi login from another card, check whether your new AAdvantage card is automatically linked, or whether you need to add it manually. Citi typically prompts you to link accounts by card number during enrollment. Set up autopay at this time using the same bank account you had with Barclays.
Key timeline
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| Now through April 23 | Barclays account fully functional; cancel or note your autopay; make any due payments early |
| April 24, 2026 | Migration date; accounts transfer to Citi; Barclays access ends; new Citi card numbers issued |
| April 24-26 | No-login window: both Barclays and Citi portals temporarily unavailable; physical card still works for purchases |
| April 27, 2026 | Citi online access available; set up autopay; enroll online account; link to existing Citi login if applicable |
| February 28, 2027 | Legacy $199 rate expires for Aviator Silver converts to Globe; standard $350 rate takes effect at next renewal |
Bottom line
The Barclays-to-Citi AAdvantage migration is happening whether you want it to or not, and the earn rates and core benefits are staying the same at launch. Your miles are safe. The two real risks are an autopay gap (Barclays autopay does not follow you to Citi) and missed subscription updates (new card numbers mean every recurring charge needs to be updated). If you hold the Aviator Silver, your fee stays at $199 through February 28, 2027, but you should already start evaluating whether the Globe’s benefits justify the $350 rate when that date arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Will my AAdvantage miles disappear?
No. AAdvantage miles are stored in your American Airlines loyalty account, not inside your credit card account. The bank that issues your card has no control over your miles balance. Whether your card is issued by Barclays or Citi, the miles belong to your AAdvantage account and are unaffected by the transfer.
Do I need to apply for a new card?
No. Your existing account migrates automatically. There is no application, no credit pull, and no new account opening. You will become a Citi cardholder on April 24 without taking any action.
Will my card number change?
Yes, for most cardholders. Citi is issuing new card numbers as part of this migration. Watch your mail in the days after April 24 for a new card from Citi. Once you receive it, update any merchants, subscriptions, or recurring charges where you have the old Barclays card on file.
What happens if I have autopay set up?
Your Barclays autopay enrollment does not transfer to Citi. This is the most important thing to act on before April 24. Log in to Barclays, confirm the bank account linked to your autopay, then cancel it. After April 27, go to citi.com and set up new autopay using the same bank account. If you miss this step and autopay lapses, you could incur a late fee on your first Citi statement.
I have the Aviator Silver. Is the Globe worth the $350 annual fee?
Not necessarily, and you do not need to decide right now. Citi is honoring your $199 annual fee through February 28, 2027. At that rate, the Globe’s benefits, including four Admirals Club one-time passes (worth roughly $60 each) and an annual companion certificate, likely pencil out. At $350, the math is tighter and depends on how often you fly American. Revisit this decision six months before your February 2027 renewal.
